'Snow in April'

I know I said I would post more frequently and I’ve not. I’m sorry. We were burgled recently and my laptop was stolen. I know that it is just a ‘thing’ but to be honest, I’m feeling quite down about it.

It isn’t just the laptop (although it did have all the patterns I’ve downloaded over the years and my new design on it); it is the thought that someone got into my home so easily and looked through all my things. I hate the fact that they might have touched my baby’s toys. This is a bit silly and I shouldn’t let it bother me but it does. We are going to get a new lock fitted soon, so that will make me feel a bit happier I think.

Everyday the blank spot on the coffee table where my laptop used to sit reminds me about the burglary. If I were to get close to explaining how I feel about it, I would say that mostly I feel foolish. It feels like ‘a slap in the face when you expected a kiss’ (by the way if you can tell me where this quote comes from and what the full version is I’ll be sooooo impressed). People are all so nice to you when you have had a baby and I guess I had got used to it! I was wondering around with my head in the clouds and a smile on my face and I really didn’t expect it.

Anyway, that is enough moaning about that. Let’s send it under the metaphorical bridge. I’ve been knit, knit, knitting away here. I can’t really show you as I am still planning on trying to get the pattern into one of the online magazines but I’m really pleased with it so far. By the way what are your views on beads in lace? I can’t decide whether to put some teardrop beads in the border of the design or not.

I’ve put some pictures of my finished scarf up. I was hoping to take some of me wearing it but somehow the only person who gets photographed these days is my beautiful Alex.

Serendipity Scarf* details

Yarn: Colinette Point 5 dusk - 3 skeins
Needles: 15mm Lantern moon (lovely, lovely, lovely)
Pattern: none really

I wanted to really show off the colours in the yarn and a simple garter stitch just didn’t seem to do it. So I used a kind of slipped stitch rib, which, as well as meaning it didn’t curl, made beautiful bud like stitches that seemed to bloom out of the fabric.

CO 14 stitches
Row 1: (RS) K14
Row 2: P2, (slp wyf, P2) 4 times

Repeat these two rows until you almost run out of yarn, BO.

*I'll explain the name of the scarf in a future post!

Oh Kendra I'm so very sorry you were burgled, I understand exactly how you feel, and no it's not silly at all. Happened to us years ago. Hope you can replace the laptop fairly quickly from the insurance, and hope you didn't lose too much of your design work.

The scarf is lovely, thanks for sharing the pattern - I've three skeins of the same that would look lovely knit up in it :-)

That is horrible, no wonder you feel how you do. Your scarf is nice, and Alex is a cutie! The quote is from an old fashioned book I should think, one that I have never read like Anne of Green Gables, but then I don't remember anything I have read!!!

Hi Kendra, I am very sorry to hear this bad news. It's an awful thing to happen, I am not surprised you are feeling down. Take your time and maybe it will be worth to talk it over with someone.

The quotation is by Lucy Maud Montgomery, in her book Anne of Ingleside, the sixth book in the Anne of Green Gables series. This is the full paragraph:

April came tiptoeing in beautifully that year with sunshine and soft winds for a few days; and then a driving northeast snowstorm dropped a white blanket over the world again. "Snow in April is abominable," said Anne. "Like a slap in the face when you expected a kiss." Ingleside was fringed with icicles and for two long weeks the days were raw and the nights hard-bitten. Then the snow grudgingly disappeared and when the news went round that the first robin had been seen in the Hollow Ingleside plucked up heart and ventured to believe that the miracle of spring was really going to happen again.

I have found the e-book at http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks01/0100281h.html chapter 21 has got that paragraph.

I'm so sorry to hear you were burgled, that's awful. No wonder you're feeling like that -- it's an invasion into what's supposed to be safe. I hope you'll be able to replace everything.

The scarf does look gorgeous. I really like the way it plays up the yarn!

That's such an awful invasion of your own safe space and your feelings are quite understandable. Such a cute pic of Alex - very sweet! And that scarf looks super cozy - good luck with the designing and I hope the loss of the lap top hasn't set you back too much.

I think you are entitled to feel very shocked and sad and whatever else you feel. Its awful to think someone has invaded your home. And we all love our PCs and laptops - they are the new journal and we fill them with ourselves, our little notes, our ideas, and our contacts!
What a strange coincidence that Queen of Fr thought the quote was from AofGG and it was!!!!! Wow!
I hope you can get back to cloud 9 very soon. Your son is delightful and a very good reason to believe in the benevolence of the Universe. Whoever came in to your home obviously needs just what your home has, what you have created for your family - they just don't realise they have to build it for themselves as you have done!

How awful for you Kendra. I would feel violated too because someone has come into your home where you are supposed to feel safe. I hope you feel better soon and over time I am sure you will. Your baby is so adorable and I am sure he will help cheer you up a lot.

Being burgled is such a PERSONAL violation - how horrible for you and yours, and I send you huge hugs.

On a different note - lovely scarf - glorious colours. Several folk at Skip North had simple jumpers made from Point 5: I was looking at them very enviously.

First of all, your baby is adorable!

Second of all, I don't think the way you feel is weird at all. My car broken into years ago and I felt completely violated for a long time. I think it would be worse if your home was broken into. That is your personal life and it is a violation for a stranger to not only steal things but to look among your personal belongings.

I hope you feel better about it soon and I am so sorry that happened. I am glad you are all safe though!

I am so sorry to hear of the burglary. You can't help but feel violated as someone has come in to what is a very personal space! My purse was stolen once from my workplace. The burglars only got $2 but it was the idea that they had gone through my things that left me unsettled for days.

I hope you are able to get a new computer soon, and have not lost very much of your designs.

Ah Kendra - bad luck.

Great quote to decsribe the feeling.

Love your scarf - that would be good for dealing with snow in April.

So sorry to hear about the burglary. Horrible. No wonder you feel invaded. And you've lost all those patterns you collected too! Sounds a good idea to upgrade your security.
The scarf looks lovely - thanks for the pattern.
